4 Local Organizations Linked to Us, Just by Asking

A free tracker and Claude prompt for building local backlinks from chambers, garden clubs, sustainability groups, and local media.

Local, relevant links to your site are valuable, on par with good reviews.

Google views links like endorsements. Endorsements from trustworthy, local websites (like your library, garden club, or garden center) are huge for visibility in Google.

So, how do you get more links? Well, you ask.

We did this for a landscaper in Massachusetts. Just by asking, we got links from:

  • Arlington Garden Club (discount for members)
  • Blue Stem Natives (recommended landscaper list)
  • Grow Native Massachusetts (recommended landscaper list)
  • Native Plant Trust (recommended landscaper list)

Still working on more.

Build the same list for your towns

There are 4 ways to pursue local links:

  • Buy it — chambers, associations
  • Offer it — garden clubs, supply stores, hardware stores
  • Ask for it — sustainability groups, land trusts
  • Earn it — local media, garden club and library talks

How to fill out a tracker fast, using Claude

  1. Make a copy of a local link-building tracker (organized by the 4 phases above).
  2. Attach it to Claude, and paste a prompt like this (fill in your blanks first):

Attached is my local link-building tracker template. I run a landscaping company called [Company Name] serving [Town 1, Town 2, Town 3...].

Research real local organizations in these towns for each of the 4 phases already in the spreadsheet:

  • Phase 1 (Buy It): chambers of commerce, local business associations, and any scholarship or community foundation sponsorships worth setting up
  • Phase 2 (Offer It): garden clubs, landscape supply stores, and hardware stores who might offer their members a discount in exchange for a listing
  • Phase 3 (Ask For It): sustainability groups, land trusts, conservation organizations, and town green/resource pages
  • Phase 4 (Earn It): local news outlets and community newspapers, plus garden clubs and public libraries that host speaker events or workshops

For each one you find, fill in the row with its name, website, town, and any notes needed (cost, discount offered, page to target, pitch angle, or how to set it up, whatever the column asks for). Leave the Status column blank, I'll fill that in myself as I make progress. Add as many rows as you need, don't stop at one per category if there are more real options in my towns.

  1. Start asking.
